Role Call: Staff Who Shape the School Day

Imagine, for a moment, that you are standing inside a school building. Classrooms are humming with conversation. The gymnasium is occupied. The phone in the front office rings over the sound of chatter. People mill about the hallways.

Who do you see inside the school? Whose voices, whose footsteps, do you envision there?

Perhaps your first thought is students, of course. And indeed, there are hundreds of students in the school. Next, you might think of teachers. After that, maybe you expect that the voices in the front office are those of the principal, the assistant principal and administrative assistants. Who else?

Dozens of other school staff are probably flitting about, helping the school day run smoothly, responding to student needs, participating in children’s learning, and coming and going from the building as their responsibilities require.

Often, these staff members work behind the scenes. Their roles may be less visible. Their work may be misunderstood or underappreciated by the public and even some of their colleagues. They are librarians. They are counselors. They are bus drivers. They are paraeducators. They are food service workers. They are school nurses. They are custodians. They are crossing guards. They are technology coaches, curriculum specialists, and speech pathologists.

Individually, they help shape the day for kids. Together, they help bring a school community to life.

In our Role Call series, we’re elevating the experiences of these staff members. Each piece in the collection features someone in a different school “role,” helping us to demystify what they do and better understand their unique contribution to their community. Read their stories below.

Kitchen Manager

I was young and going through stuff once, so it's like, ‘What would I have wanted? For someone to just talk to me.’ They don't have to necessarily talk to me about what they’re going through, but just talk to me.— Khallela Ahmad

Operations Coordinator

A big, important piece in my work is making sure that we know where our kids are — either we know they're in the building safe, and if they're not in the building, what's going on? Where are you? Why aren't you here? Can we get you in? Is there anything that we can help you with?— Nancy Muñoz

Speech Language Pathologist

When I was in school, we had one speech pathologist. No one really even knew who she was. ... She wasn't involved in the day-to-day educational interventions like we are. We're everywhere now. You can't separate what we do from a student's academic success.— Debi Ryan

School Librarian

I wish every school was resourced with a full-time, certified school librarian. Whether it's a charter school, a traditional public school, a private school, an independent school, they all need a school library with a school librarian in it to support information literacy and become the thought partners of classroom teachers.— Jami Rhue

Curriculum Specialist

If we have an assessment that we write, and it's two questions too long, then you have students who have math anxiety because the bell's about to ring, and they’re like, ‘I didn't finish my test. Now I'm nervous.’ So every decision that we make as curriculum specialists affects teachers and students.— Phonisha Hawkins

School Nurse

I get to make a difference in the lives of children and families. [We] have the opportunity to take them out of poverty, to change the course of what the rest of their lives will look like.— Eva Stone

Tech Coach

Learning does not have to be boring. It should be fun. And that was my passion, to make learning fun for the students.— Miguel Quinteros

School Counselor

Most counselors are pretty good at compartmentalizing the bigger issues so we don't take it home at night, but we get to deal with some of the hardest things that a kid, or even a staff member, will see.— Leighanne Mainguy
